Shield360 and Microsoft Purview
Microsoft Purview brings Microsoft's sensitivity labels, data loss prevention, audit and retention to Microsoft 365 Copilot and, through its browser extension, onboarded devices and pay-as-you-go billing, to other AI apps. Shield360 is built to be vendor-neutral: one policy and one record across AI tools, coding agents, agents and AI spend. Many organizations will want both.

01 · In short
Where each one fits
Purview governs AI through Microsoft.
Shield360 governs it across vendors.
Choose Purview first when
Your environment is Microsoft 365, Edge for Business and Entra, and the first job is keeping labeled content out of Microsoft 365 Copilot, with audit, retention and eDiscovery of Copilot interactions in the same place as the rest of your Microsoft 365 records.
Choose Shield360 first when
AI use spans vendors — ChatGPT and Claude in the browser, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other coding agents, direct API keys, MCP servers — and you need one policy over them, personal accounts told apart from company seats, and what that AI costs per person.
Run both when
Purview stays the system of record for labels and Microsoft 365 content, and Shield360 covers the AI use outside it, the spend, and the agent access. Shield360 sends its security events to Microsoft Sentinel as OCSF, so both land in the same SOC.

Question by question.
Purview's cells come from Microsoft Learn and Microsoft's own blogs. Several Purview AI features are billed pay-as-you-go or need particular Microsoft 365 licenses; the notes say where Microsoft states it. Shield360 is marked Partial or No wherever that is the honest answer.
| Question | Microsoft Purview | Shield360 |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Copilot interactions | ✓ DLP can keep labeled files and emails out of Copilot processing (E5-class license); blocking prompts with sensitive information is in preview | Partial Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat prompts checked in a managed browser; Copilot Studio agents governed through the MCP gateway; Shield360 does not govern Microsoft 365 Copilot's access to tenant data |
| Sensitivity labels and data classification | ✓ Sensitivity labels and sensitive information types | Partial Detects kinds of sensitive data in prompts and files; a classification catalog gives each class an owner and a sensitivity; does not read or apply Microsoft sensitivity labels |
| Sensitive data typed into third-party AI sites | ✓ Endpoint DLP on onboarded devices can warn or block (Chrome needs the Purview extension); inline DLP in Edge for Business | ✓ Extension in managed Chrome and Edge: prompts and file uploads checked on eleven AI chat sites and on AI sites you add (warn, mask or block per kind of data); other listed AI sites allowed, warned about or blocked |
| AI traffic from apps and SDKs | Partial Network data security through Global Secure Access or partner SASE products; audit or block | ✓ AI proxy addressed by base URL, no certificate; on a machine, in a container or hosted; warn, mask or block; approved-model list |
| Coding agents | Partial Microsoft announced public-preview coverage of GitHub Copilot CLI, Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and OpenClaw in June 2026 | ✓ Hooks in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Windsurf and GitHub Copilot CLI: warn or block sensitive data, secret-file reads and risky sequences; no masking |
| Personal versus company AI accounts | Not stated | ✓ Personal Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and Copilot plans told apart from company seats |
| AI spend per person | Not stated The Copilot usage report shows adoption, not spend; pay-as-you-go Copilot and Azure AI costs appear in Microsoft cost management | ✓ Seats and per-token use per person, machine, tool, model and key; vendor bills beside the estimate |
| Agent identity and access | ✓ Microsoft Entra Agent ID; Agent 365 (separate license) extends Entra controls to agents | ✓ MCP gateway: a token per agent, deny-by-default grants that can expire, denied calls recorded |
| AI regulation assessments | ✓ Compliance Manager premium templates: EU AI Act, ISO/IEC 42001, ISO/IEC 23894, NIST AI RMF | ✓ Control status from observed evidence and owner attestation for EU AI Act (33 Articles), ISO/IEC 42001, NIST AI RMF (all 72 subcategories), OWASP Agentic; daily history; evidence, not certification |
| Audit, retention and eDiscovery | ✓ Copilot interactions in Audit; retention policies and eDiscovery for Copilot and AI apps; pay-as-you-go for non-Microsoft AI audit records | ✓ Append-only audit log, legal holds, exports; eDiscovery cases with review sets and hashed exports, over the records Shield360 holds |
| Evidence for an auditor | Partial Compliance Manager assessments and improvement actions | ✓ Evidence package with an Ed25519-signed SHA-256 manifest that verifies offline; expiring read-only auditor access |
| Deployment | Microsoft cloud service | Managed at app.shield360.ai, or self-hosted with Docker Compose |

03 · Together
Running both
Purview for Microsoft 365.
Shield360 for the rest of the AI.
Leave labels where they are
Purview keeps classifying and labeling Microsoft 365 content and keeping it out of Copilot. Shield360 does not touch labels and does not need them.
Cover the browser, the terminal and the API
Shield360's extension, coding-agent hooks and AI proxy apply one policy to eleven AI chat sites and your own AI sites in the browser, to six coding agents, and to API calls. Purview's own browser, endpoint and network controls can stay in place alongside it.
One SOC
Shield360 sends guard decisions, audit records, sign-ins, shadow-AI observations and agent-gateway denials to Microsoft Sentinel as OCSF, next to Purview's alerts.
Spend next to Microsoft's bill
Shield360's Azure OpenAI and Azure Cost Management connectors read what Microsoft billed, and keep cloud cost apart from AI figures so nothing is counted twice.
04 · Limits
What Shield360 does not do
What Shield360
does not do.
- It does not read, apply or enforce Microsoft sensitivity labels.
- It does not govern what Microsoft 365 Copilot can reach inside your tenant. Its Microsoft Copilot integration governs Copilot Studio agents through the MCP gateway and adds a Shield360 agent to Microsoft 365 Copilot; it does not read Copilot interactions from Microsoft 365.
- Its eDiscovery searches only what Shield360 holds under a legal hold, not Microsoft 365 mailboxes, files or Copilot interactions.
- The browser extension runs in managed Chrome and Edge, and checks prompts and file uploads on eleven AI chat sites and on AI sites you add; on other listed AI sites it allows, warns or blocks the site itself.
- Coding-agent hooks warn or block; they cannot mask.
- It does not intercept TLS. AI use outside the extension, the proxy, a hook or the gateway is still observed and attributed, but not blocked.
- Evidence and control status are evidence for an auditor, not a certification.
